Currently, there are two types of oxygen gas on the market: medical oxygen gas, also known as oxygen for home use, and industrial oxygen gas. So, what is the difference between medical oxygen and industrial oxygen? And why are there two types?
What is oxygen gas?

Oxygen is a chemical element that makes up over 50% of the Earth’s crust. It is essential for life and combustion reactions. It is one of the most reactive nonmetals.
It can form oxide compounds with many other elements. Under normal conditions, oxygen is a colorless, odorless, and tasteless gas.
How do medical oxygen and industrial oxygen differ?
Purity of oxygen gas
- Medical oxygen gas has a relatively high purity, around 99.5%, 99.999%. It contains fewer impurities.
- Industrial oxygen gas has a lower purity, around 99.2%, and contains more impurities such as Carbon Monoxide (CO), CO2 (Carbon Dioxide), and Acetylene (C2H2).
Uses of medical oxygen and industrial oxygen
Uses of medical oxygen gas
- Medical oxygen gas, also known as oxygen for home use, has a purity of up to 99.5%. It is used to support medical treatment, rescue, and home care, as well as in hospitals and medical facilities.
- Medical applications: Used for patients with asphyxia, heart disease, and respiratory disorders. High-pressure medical oxygen is also used to treat Carbon Monoxide (CO) poisoning, gas gangrene, and specific oxygen-related diseases.
Uses of industrial oxygen gas

- Industrial oxygen has a purity of 99.2% and contains other impurities such as CO, CO2, and C2H2.
- Industrial oxygen gas is used for applications such as metal welding and cutting, glass melting, and other industrial processes.
Can industrial oxygen be used for breathing?
Due to the difference in purity, industrial oxygen cannot be used as a substitute for medical oxygen. Inhaling industrial oxygen can lead to asphyxiation or respiratory problems. If this occurs, the person should be taken to the nearest medical facility for immediate treatment.
Understanding and differentiating between medical oxygen and industrial oxygen is crucial to ensure proper usage and avoid potentially harmful consequences.
