What is calibration gas or standard gas?
Calibration gas or standard gas is a gas mixture or reference gas used as a standard for comparison in the calibration of various types of analytical instruments, such as gas analyzers or gas detectors.
To be considered a calibration gas, the gas must be traceable to national or international standards. Traceability is the unbroken chain of comparisons to a stated reference, usually an accepted national or international standard.
Standard calibration gas establishes the concentration of known chemical components to be analyzed. In calibration gas cylinders, preparation tolerance (PT) and certified/analytical accuracy (CA) are extremely important factors.
Tolerance is the concentration range of one or more minor components in the standard gas cylinder mixture. PT is measured within the concentration range and is also known as mixing tolerance.
For example, a 500ppm CO calibration gas cylinder balanced in nitrogen with a PT of +/- 10% will contain between 450 ppm and 550 ppm CO in Nitrogen.
Preparation tolerance can be reduced by using the latest technologies in the production of those gases. The standard tolerance of the standard gas cylinder will be determined based on the manufacturer’s experience and customer requirements.
How is calibration gas applied?
Any measuring device, after a period of use, needs to be recalibrated to ensure its accuracy. This is due to component changes, changes in the operating environment, contamination from the measurement environment, etc.
