MIG welding machine technology, stainless steel welding with CO2

Khí hàn mig

CO2 gas is a compound that exists in gaseous form under normal conditions. In the atmosphere, it consists of one carbon atom and two oxygen atoms. It is an industrial gas that is easy and inexpensive to produce, offering high welding productivity in a CO2 environment. Therefore, CO2 gas is quite commonly used in MIG/MAG welding technology. So, how is CO2 gas used in MIG welding technology?

What is a MIG Welder?

What is a MIG welder? A MIG welder is an electronic welding machine that uses the Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW) process. The consumable welding wire serves as the primary electrode, automatically fed into the workpiece within a shielding gas environment, which can be inert gases like argon or helium, utilizing a wire feeder.

What is the Operating Principle of a MIG Welder?

MIG welding is a welding process that uses a welding wire spool. When operated, this wire continuously feeds out and welds in a shielding gas environment. It can be automated or semi-automated depending on the technology of the machinery and equipment.

Characteristics of MIG Welding Technology

In MIG welding, the welding wire continuously feeds and the process involves the heat required to create the weld being supplied by an electric arc maintained between the parts being welded and the wire electrode.

The continuous welding area is supplied with welding material (wire electrode) by a torch (welding gun), which provides a flow of gas or gas mixture to protect the wire electrode, the welding arc, and the surrounding area from weld contamination, preventing porosity in the weld.

An electric arc is established between the continuously fed, melting wire electrode and the workpiece. The electric arc is shielded by a flow of inert or reducing gas. The arc length and welding current are automatically maintained while the welding speed and electrode angle are maintained by the welder.

During welding, the welding rod or wire is first brought into contact with the workpiece to create a short circuit. Due to the contact resistance and the short-circuit current, high temperatures are generated. Consequently, the air gap between the electrode tip and the workpiece becomes a conductive gas, producing high temperatures and intense light. Maintaining the arc column at a stable distance creates the welding process.

Advantages of CO2 Gas for MIG Welding

  • Fast and continuous welding speed, thus saving welding material.
  • Higher weld quality compared to conventional stick welding, smooth and glossy welds without visible seams. Low power consumption.
  • Can weld almost all metals.
  • Easy to automate.
  • Long continuous welds without interruption.
  • High working efficiency, saving time and energy.

Applications of MIG Welding Technology

  • MIG welding technology is widely used in the production of various products, such as tables, chairs, motorcycles, bicycle frames, and in car body manufacturing, mechanical workshops, production technology lines, etc.
  • Besides, it also has the ability to be automated for applications in fields such as automatic welding, robot assembly, and automatic welding control.

What Gas Does a MIG Welder Use?

MIG welders use the following gas mixtures:

  • CO2.
  • 80% argon + 20% CO2 gas mixture.
  • 93% argon + 5% CO2 + 2%O2 gas mixture.
  • Pure Argon.

For 1.5mm steel, the gases are used on the same welder setup, and the gas cylinders use the same regulator setup.

Pure argon gas is commonly used mainly for welding aluminum and less often for steel. The arc it produces is generally softer and more diffuse than that of CO2 + Argon welding, making it difficult for small, precise welding operations, and the weld spatter is often higher compared to using other gases.

Difference Between MIG and MAG Welders

MIG and MAG welders are essentially the same type of machine, but they are used for different purposes. MIG welding uses solid core wire without flux. Therefore, it requires 100% inert gas such as argon or helium to ensure a non-porous and glossy weld without slag after welding.

MAG welding, on the other hand, uses flux-cored wire and gases like CO2 or Ar + CO2 to expel impurities from the weld, ensuring a non-porous weld.

What is CO2 Welding? Information about CO2 Welding Technology

How to weld stainless steel?

Welding stainless steel with a MIG welder is a technique that uses consumable electrode arc welding in a highly active environment, specifically with CO2 or CO2 + O2 gas. The CO2 welding method is widely used in the high-end welding machine manufacturing industry. CO2 welding technology helps create beautiful and safe stainless steel welds.

CO2 welding technology is easy to operate and can weld all metals and alloys. At the same time, it consumes less energy and causes less heat distortion. It can weld in any position, offering high working efficiency.

CO2 gas used in MIG welding technology is increasingly becoming popular in various industries. The information above can help customers better understand MIG welders, CO2 welding, and CO2 welding technology.
