In addition to some harmful effects, SO2 gas has 2 outstanding advantages as the main component in sulfuric acid production and as a bleaching agent. So, what is SO2 gas? What is sulfurous gas, what does SO2 gas smell like, what are the physical and chemical properties of SO2?

Let’s explore in this article from Migco.

What is SO2 gas or Sulfurous gas?

How to pronounce SO2? Structural formula of sulfurous gas

The formula of sulfurous gas is denoted as SO2 – a chemical compound also known as sulfur dioxide. It is the main product when sulfur is burned.

SO2 (sulfurous acid) is generated by the combustion of fossil fuels such as coal and oil, or by the smelting of ores such as aluminum, copper, zinc, lead, and iron.

What are the physical properties of sulfurous gas – sulfur dioxide? What does SO2 gas smell like?

What does SO2 gas smell like? How to identify sulfurous gas

Sulfurous gas – SO2 is a gas that is colorless, heavier than air, and has a pungent, suffocating odor. It is a toxic gas and dissolves in water.

SO2 has a melting point of -72.4°C and a boiling point of -10°C, and sulfur dioxide gas is a strong reducing agent.

In addition, the gas can cloud limewater and decolorize bromine solution and rose petals.

Is SO2 gas soluble in water?

SO2 dissolves in water to form a weak acid solution H2SO3

Chemical properties of So2 – sulfurous gas

what is so2

What are the chemical properties of SO2?

Sulfur dioxide, also known as sulfurous oxide

When SO2 meets water, it forms a weak acid solution, sulfurous acid (H2SO3)

Equation for the reaction with H2O in the laboratory:

SO2 + H2O –> H2SO3

Because H2SO3 is a weak acid (stronger than hydrosulfuric acid) and unstable (even in solution, H2SO3 decomposes into SO2 and H2O), SO2 reacts with alkaline solutions to form two types of salts: neutral salts, such as Na2SO3, containing sulfite ions (SO3), and acid salts, such as NaHSO3, containing bisulfite ions (HSO3).

In the compound SO2, the sulfur element has an oxidation number of +4, which is an intermediate oxidation number between -2 and +6. Therefore, in redox reactions, SO2 can be reduced or oxidized.

SO2 gas reacting with O2 can produce S or SO2 depending on the reaction conditions and the amount of oxygen:

♦ 2H2S + 3O2 → 2H2O + 2SO2 (if oxygen is in excess)

♦ 2H2S + O2 → 2H2O + 2S

At high temperatures, H2S gas will burn in the air with a pale blue flame, and H2S is oxidized to SO2:

♦ 2H2S + 3O2 -> 2H2O + 2SO2

When reacting with chlorine, H2S can produce S or H2SO4 depending on the reaction conditions:

♦ H2S + 4Cl2 + 4H2O → 8HCl + H2SO4

♦ H2S + Cl2 → 2 HCl + S (chlorine gas reacts with H2S gas)

H2S solution is weakly acidic in two stages: When reacting with alkaline solutions, it can form acid salts or neutral salts

♦ H2S + NaOH → NaHS + H2O

♦ H2S + 2NaOH → Na2S + H2O

What are the harmful effects of SO2?

Before exploring what SO2 gas (sulfurous acid) is used for and its applications, let’s learn about the harmful effects of SO2.

Effects of sulfurous gas on humans

Direct exposure can affect human health, causing symptoms such as difficulty breathing, burning sensations in the nose and throat, and other symptoms. It is a cause of diseases such as pneumonia, respiratory infections, and eye inflammation.

Especially when combined with water (H2O) and oxygen (O2), it will produce sulfuric acid in the following chemical reaction:

       2SO2 + O2 + 2H2O → 2H2SO4

This substance can harm the lungs and cause respiratory diseases. It can also reduce the alkaline reserve in the blood, impairing the metabolism of sugars and proteins, which is one of the causes of vitamin deficiency. This reaction can also lead to other effects such as blood vessel constriction, reducing oxygen flow to red blood cells.

Effects on the environment

  • Sulfur dioxide is considered a significant environmental hazard.
  • However, the most common source of SO2 for humans today is from tobacco smoke, emissions from factories, heating systems, and vehicles… which pollute the air.
  • One of the harmful effects of SO2 gas is its contribution to acid rain, which corrodes buildings and damages plants.

Above are the harmful effects of SO2. Alongside these harmful effects, SO2 has important applications in industrial production.

What are the applications of SO2 gas (sulfur dioxide)?

What is SO2 used for?

Taking advantage of the properties mentioned above, SO2 gas (sulfurous acid) has several applications in life, such as:

  • Application of SO2 in the production of sulfuric acid (H2SO4)
  • Bleaching agent for paper, pulp, sugar solutions…
  • SO2 is used as a preservative for dried fruits
  • Antibacterial and antioxidant in wine production
  • …

Most effective way to treat sulfur dioxide gas

Besides businesses that purchase SO2 gas for use, some factories and production facilities regularly release sulfur dioxide gas into the environment. Currently, there are 3 most effective methods to absorb and treat SO2 gas:

  • Absorption of SO2 gas with lime slurry solution

Lime slurry (Ca(OH)2) is mixed and sprayed into a drying tower, and the waste gas from the furnace is used as the heating agent. The solution particles dry in the waste gas, absorb SO2 gas, and are collected in a dust collection device after the spray chamber.

  • Absorption of SO2 gas with caustic soda solution

Some domestic applications use a spray tower combined with a packed tower to scrub SO2 with caustic soda (NaOH) solution instead of lime solution.

This solution avoids the drawback of using lime, which can clog the solution spraying system and only absorbs SO2. However, this system consumes a significant amount of caustic soda and requires the waste gas to be cooled before treatment.

  • Absorption of SO2 gas with soda solution

Soda solution can be used instead of NaOH solution to absorb SO2 gas (sulfur dioxide)

In addition to the above methods, there are many other scientific methods for treating SO2 gas based on chemistry. Choose the method that best suits your needs for waste gas removal.

Above is information about the properties, harm, and applications of SO2 gas. So, where to buy SO2 and where to sell this high-quality gas?
