What is calibration – Things to know about calibration

Hiệu chuẩn thiết bị

Have you ever heard of calibration? Are you curious about what calibration is and its effects on life and production? In technical terms, the essence of calibration is to compare a measuring instrument with a standard to evaluate its errors and other technical or measurement characteristics. So, what is calibration?

The Law on Measurement of Vietnam stipulates that Calibration is an activity aimed at determining and establishing the relationship between the measured value of a measurement standard, between a measuring instrument, and the measured value of the quantity being measured.

What is Calibration?

According to the Law on Measurement of Vietnam, the concept of Calibration is an activity to determine or establish the relationship between the measured value of a measurement standard, a measuring instrument, and the measured value of the quantity being measured.

Technically, the essence of calibration is to compare a measuring instrument with a standard to evaluate its errors and other technical and measurement characteristics.

Calibration is a measure used to transfer the magnitude of a unit of measurement from a standard with the highest accuracy to common measuring instruments. It serves to ensure the uniformity and necessary accuracy of all measuring instruments.

The basic tool to ensure the traceability of measurement is the calibration of measuring instruments. Calibration involves determining the measurement characteristics of that measuring instrument.

Calibration is performed through direct comparison with known standards. A calibration certificate or calibration result will be issued, and in most cases, a calibration label will be attached.

Based on the information on this calibration label, the user can decide whether the measuring instrument is suitable for their intended use.

What is the Role of Calibration?

The Importance of Calibrated Measuring Instruments:

Equipment Calibration

♦ Ensures that the measurement display of a measuring instrument is consistent with other measurements,

♦ Determines the measurement uncertainty of measuring instruments,

♦ Establishes the reliability of the measuring instrument.

Calibration achieves the following:

♦ Calibration results allow for the conversion of measurement values into indicators or the determination of adjustments to the indicators,

♦ Calibration can determine other measurement characteristics such as the influence of important measurement quantities,

♦ Calibration results can be recorded in a document called a calibration certificate or calibration report.

Calibration activities maintain the values of the standard system as well as the system of measuring instruments currently in use.

Their traceability to measurement standards ensures the uniformity and highest accuracy of measurements taken in production, business, or scientific and technical research.

Therefore, calibration plays a very important role in practical production and business activities, in research, and in economic development.

Calibration Costs and the Risks of Not Calibrating

In many cases, calibration is often very expensive, so it is often ignored to reduce costs. Or due to a lack of methods and personnel to perform calibration, people intentionally extend the interval between calibration checks on equipment.

However, neglecting calibration can lead to unwanted production downtime, causing product quality issues. More seriously, it can lead to mass product recalls and rework.

Moreover, critical equipment or machinery in hazardous locations with sensors that drift over time can cause safety hazards for personnel.

Similarly, a product manufactured by poorly calibrated equipment can pose a danger to users. In specific cases, companies can even have their operating licenses revoked for failing to meet requirements. This is especially serious in the food or pharmaceutical industry.

What are the Applications of Calibration Gas?

What is Calibration
Calibration of gas detectors

Calibration gas is used for the calibration of:

  • Laboratory equipment.
  •

  • Equipment for monitoring industrial gas flows, controlling technological processes of measuring instruments in the oil and gas industry.
  •

  • Radiation control, creating standard environments.
  •

  • Checking fire alarm devices, inspection and measurement in monitoring networks.
  •

  • Diagnosis and treatment of diseases in medicine…
  •

  • Calibration of toxic gas concentration meters….

Currently, calibration gas cylinders include single toxic gas & multi-component types.

  • Single gas calibration cylinders are used to calibrate single toxic gas concentration measuring devices. Each cylinder contains only one type of gas: CO2, H2S, CO, O2, etc.
  •

  • Calibration cylinders containing a mixture of different gases are used for devices that measure the concentration of a mixture of toxic gases. These cylinders are more cost-effective and safer because they help users minimize exposure time to toxic gas environments.

MIGCO currently provides these mixed calibration gas cylinders with mixtures of CO2, H2S, CO, CH4, O2, etc., suitable for 4 or 5 toxic gas measuring devices.

Mixed Calibration Gas Cylinder

Below are some calibration gas mixtures that MIGCO is currently supplying for combustible gas meters, fixed or portable gas measuring systems:

  • Standard gas cylinder with 50% LEL Methane (CH4) / Air and Model 2AL
  •

  • Standard gas cylinder with 2.5% Carbon Dioxide (CO₂), 20.9% Oxygen (O₂), Balance Nitrogen (N₂)
  •

  • Standard gas cylinder with 25 PPM Hydrogen Sulfide (H₂S), 100 PPM Carbon Monoxide (CO), 19% Oxygen (O₂), 0.35% Pentane (C₅H₁₂), Balance Nitrogen (N₂)
  •

  • Standard gas cylinder with 25 PPM Hydrogen Sulfide (H₂S), 2.5% Methane (CH₄), 50 PPM Carbon Monoxide (CO), 12% Oxygen (O₂), Balance Nitrogen (N₂)
  •

  • Standard gas cylinder with Hydrogen Sulfide (H2S) 50ppm balance air – Model 8AL
  •

  • Calibration gas cylinder containing 10 ppm Ethylene Oxide (C₂H₄O) and Balance Nitrogen (N₂)
  •

  • Calibration gas cylinder containing 25 ppm Hydrogen Sulfide (H₂S) and Balance Nitrogen (N₂)
