Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a technique that uses a strong magnetic field, radio waves, and a computer to produce detailed pictures of the inside of your body.
Doctors can use this test to diagnose you or to see how well you’ve responded to treatment. Unlike X-rays and computed tomography (CT) scans, MRI does not use the harmful ionizing radiation of X-rays.
However, many people are unsure where to get an MRI, where the best MRI facilities are in Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, or other provinces, what an MRI scan is for, whether MRI scans are harmful, what the cost of an MRI scan is, and what to know during the MRI process. Let’s find the answers with Migco in the article below.
Where to get an MRI?
Today, with the development of technology, medical technology and techniques have also made significant strides. Therefore, finding a place to get an MRI is not too difficult.
You can get an MRI at medium and large hospitals in the city center near where you live. These facilities have modern machines and equipment.
Why do you need an MRI?

An MRI helps doctors diagnose illnesses or injuries. It can also show how well your body is responding to treatment.
MRI scans can be performed on different parts of the body. This method is particularly useful for examining soft tissues and the nervous system.
– Brain and spinal cord MRI scans can detect:
- Blood vessel damage;
- Brain injuries;
- Multiple sclerosis;
- Spinal cord injuries;
- Stroke;
– Heart and blood vessel MRI scans can detect damaged blood vessels from a heart attack
- Heart disease and heart problems;
MRI scans of bones and joints can detect;
- Bone infections;
- Cancer or joint damage;
Disc problems in the neck or lower back with neurological symptoms can also be examined using MRI.
MRI is also useful for checking the health of these organs:
- Breasts (for women);
- Liver and kidneys;
- Ovaries (for women);
- Prostate (for men);
A special type of MRI called functional MRI (fMRI) detects brain activity mapping. This test examines blood flow in your brain to see which areas are active when you perform certain tasks.
fMRI can detect brain problems, such as the effects of a stroke, or map brain function if you need brain surgery for epilepsy or a tumor. Doctors can use this test to plan your treatment.
How to prepare for an MRI?

Before the MRI, tell your doctor if you: Have any health problems, such as kidney or liver disease, or if you have recently had surgery?
Have any allergies to food or medications, or if you have asthma, or are pregnant. No metal is allowed in the MRI room, as the magnetic field in the machine can attract metal. Show your doctor any devices containing metal that could cause problems during the MRI.
If you have tattoos, inform your doctor. Some tattoo inks may contain metal. On the day of the scan, wear loose-fitting, comfortable clothing without any fasteners or other metal. You may need to remove personal clothing and wear a gown during the procedure. Remove all of these items before entering the MRI room:
- Cell phone
- Coins
- Dentures
- Eyeglasses
- Hearing aids
- Keys
- Bra
- Wristwatch
- Wig
What does an MRI machine look like?
![]()
A typical MRI machine looks like a large tube with openings at both ends. It has a magnet that surrounds the tube. You lie on a table that slides into the tube.
In a short-bore system, you are not entirely inside the MRI machine. Only the part of your body being scanned is inside. The rest of your body remains outside the machine. An open MRI is open on all sides. This type of machine is good if you have claustrophobia – fear of enclosed spaces – or if you are very overweight.
However, the image quality from some open MRI machines is not as good as that from closed MRI machines.
What happens during an MRI?
Before an MRI, you may be given an injection of contrast dye into a vein in your arm or hand. This dye helps doctors see the structures inside your body more clearly.
The dye commonly used in MRI scans is called gadolinium. It may leave a metallic taste in your mouth. You will lie on a table that slides into the MRI machine.
Straps may be used to keep you from moving during the scan. Your body may be completely inside the machine.
Or, part of your body may be outside the machine. The MRI machine creates a strong magnetic field inside your body. A computer takes signals from the MRI and uses them to create a series of pictures. Each picture shows a thin slice of your body.
You may hear loud tapping or thumping noises during the scan. This is the machine creating the energy to take pictures inside your body.
You can ask for earplugs or headphones to help reduce the noise. You may feel twitching during the scan because the MRI stimulates the nerves in your body. This reaction is normal and nothing to worry about.
The MRI scan will take between 20 and 90 minutes.
MRI scan cost
The average cost of an MRI scan with a contrast dye injection is around 2 million VND. This is usually not covered by insurance, so you should prepare for this expense.
