Description
What are the applications of hydrogen gas?
- Hydrogen gas is widely used in industries, oil refining, and the production of methanol, vegetable oil, and margarine.
- Hydrogen gas is commonly used in laboratories as a catalyst or a reagent, etc.
- Hydrogen is lighter than air, so it is often used in filling airships, balloons, or inflatable arches, etc.
- Hydrogen has the highest combustion temperature of all natural fuels, so it is used as fuel for spacecraft.
- Hydrogen replaces gasoline and diesel in transportation vehicles.
- In power generation, hydrogen gas is used to produce electricity, replacing fossil fuels, and in the production of fuel cells.
In particular, hydrogen gas is being researched and developed as a clean fuel source for the future. Because the H2 molecule does not contain other chemical elements, the combustion product is only water (H2O).
H2 gas is used as fuel because hydrogen is considered a safe fuel source that does not cause any environmental incidents affecting humans.
Useful information about hydrogen gas
Hydrogen gas is a common industrial gas that is colorless, odorless, and highly flammable. It is usually used in liquefied form in high-pressure gas cylinders.
What is hydrogen gas?
What is hydrogen gas? Hydrogen is a gas with the English name “hydrogen” and the Latin name “hydrogenium.” It is a chemical element in the periodic table of elements with an atomic mass of 1 (1 amu). It was formerly called “light gas” because it is the lightest gaseous element.
Hydrogen is the most abundant element in the universe, accounting for 75% of the total mass of the universe. Because hydrogen is a relatively rare naturally occurring element on Earth, as H2 gas is light, the Earth’s gravitational field is not strong enough to retain it, so it escapes into space. Therefore, hydrogen exists mainly as atomic hydrogen in the upper layers of the atmosphere.
Hydrogen is a common industrial gas that is colorless, odorless, and flammable. It is usually used in liquid form.

What is the history of hydrogen gas?
Hydrogen was first discovered as a distinct substance by Henry Cavendish in 1766. Cavendish accidentally found this gas while conducting his experiments with mercury and acids.
Although he mistakenly thought that hydrogen was a compound of mercury, Henry Cavendish was able to accurately describe many properties of hydrogen. Antoine Lavoisier named the element and proved that water is produced from hydrogen and oxygen.
What is the chemical composition, structure, and properties of hydrogen gas?
Natural state of hydrogen gas:
Natural hydrogen contains the isotope 1H (protium) with impurities of the stable isotope 2H (deuterium D, abundant) and a radioactive isotope 3H (tritium T, trace).
Hydrogen is the most abundant element in the universe. Its main source is water, consisting of two parts H and one part O (H2O). Other sources include organic substances, which make up the majority, coal, fossil fuels, and natural gases. Methane (CH4) is a fairly important source of hydrogen.
Physical properties of hydrogen gas:
- At standard temperature and pressure, hydrogen is a diatomic gas with the molecular formula H2, formed by two hydrogen atoms bonding.
- It is a colorless, odorless, difficult-to-liquefy, flammable gas with a boiling point of 20.27 K (-252.87 °C) and a melting point of 14.02 K (-259.14 °C).
- This gas is very slightly soluble in water and highly soluble in organic solvents.
Chemical properties
- Hydrogen is a nonmetal element with an atomic number of 1 and an atomic mass of 1.
- Its electron configuration belongs to period 1, group IA, and it can react with most other chemical elements. It is a strong reducing agent at high temperatures.
Is hydrogen gas toxic?
Hydrogen is an extremely flammable gas that reacts very strongly with chlorine and fluorine, producing hydrofluoric acid that can damage the lungs and other parts of the human body.
Hydrogen gas, when mixed with oxygen, will also cause explosions and ignition. Hydrogen can also explode when an electric current passes through it.
However, it is a colorless, odorless, and non-toxic gas, so you can use it with peace of mind, just be careful with accidents when it comes into contact with other substances.
Hydrogen gas is quite flammable and explosive. Our company, MIGCO, does not recommend using hydrogen gas to inflate balloons or inflatable arches to ensure safety. Instead, customers should choose helium gas because it is an inert gas and therefore safer.

How is hydrogen gas produced?
Hydrogen is produced from water and solar energy, so the hydrogen gas obtained is called solar hydrogen. Water and sunlight are two infinite resources on the planet.
Solar energy is a natural resource provided eternally by nature, about 3×1024 J/day or about 104 times the energy that the whole world consumes annually. Therefore, hydrogen produced from solar energy is an infinite fuel source, and humans can freely use this gas from century to century. It always ensures safe energy for mankind without fear of depletion. As a result, there are no energy crises and energy independence is ensured for each nation.
To obtain hydrogen gas using solar energy, there are currently two main production methods:
♦ The water electrolysis method, using solar energy through solar cells.
♦ And the photoelectrochemical water splitting method, using the radiant energy of sunlight with a photocatalyst. Both of the above methods share the following reaction:
H2O → H2 + 1/2O2
In the laboratory, hydrogen gas is usually prepared by the reaction of a metal and an acid:
For example: Zn + 2HCl → ZnCl2 + H2
In addition, hydrogen gas can be prepared in various ways: by passing water vapor over hot carbon. Decomposing hydrocarbons with heat, adding strong bases to an aluminum solution, or reducing dilute acid with a metal (capable of displacing hydrogen from the acid).
Commercial hydrogen production is usually from natural gas, also treated with hot steam. At high temperatures (700-1,100 °C), water vapor reacts with methane to produce carbon monoxide and hydrogen.
CH4 + H2O → CO + 3 H2
– Producing hydrogen by electrolyzing a solution with a diaphragm.
2NaCl + 2H2O → 2NaOH + H2 + Cl2
– Electrolysis of water:
2H2O → 2H2 + O2
– Additional hydrogen can be obtained from CO through the following water-gas shift reaction:
CO + H2O → CO2 + H2
How is hydrogen gas transported and delivered?
Depending on the amount of hydrogen gas needed, customers can choose the corresponding hydrogen gas cylinder to suit their intended use.
Common types of hydrogen cylinders currently include 41L, 47L, and 50L cylinders with a filling pressure of 150 bar or 200 bar. You place an order and MIGCO will deliver the gas using specialized transport vehicles to ensure safety.
