Applications of CO Gas – Carbon Monoxide

Application of CO in Food

Carbon monoxide gas is currently used to preserve food and seafood. The main application of CO is for various fresh meat products such as beef, pork, and fish to maintain their freshness.
Carbon monoxide combines with myoglobin to form carboxy myoglobin, a bright red cherry-colored pigment.

Application of CO in Medicine:

Carbon monoxide is used in medicine as an effective neurotransmitter. It is one of the three naturally regulating gases that respond to inflammation in the body (ranked second is nitric oxide and third is hydrogen sulfide).
In many body tissues, all three gases are known to act as effective anti-inflammatory and vasodilating agents, and beneficially promote the growth of cerebral blood vessels.
Inhalation of carbon monoxide has been shown to reduce inflammation associated with allergic asthma in mice.
Carbon monoxide is also effective against lung damage caused by ischemia.

Carbon Monoxide Gas Application in Metallurgy

Because carbon monoxide is a strong reducing agent, humans have known how to use CO gas in metallurgy since ancient times to reduce metals from ores.
Carbon monoxide gas displaces oxygen from metal oxides and turns them into pure metals at high temperatures, forming carbon dioxide (CO2) in the process.

Manufacturing Carbon Monoxide (CO) Lasers

Carbon monoxide has also been used as an effective cooling medium in high-power infrared lasers.

Application of CO Gas in Industry

Carbon monoxide gas is an industrial gas with various applications in chemical production due to its characteristic properties.
A large amount of industrial aldehydes is produced by the hydroformylation reaction of alkenes, carbon monoxide, and H2. Hydroformylation is combined with the Shell higher olefin process to provide precursors for detergents and their production.

Useful Information about CO Gas – Carbon Monoxide

CO gas (scientific name: Carbon Monoxide) is a chemical compound commonly used in many industrial fields. It plays an important role in the seafood processing and preservation of fresh fish and meat for export.
CO exists as a colorless, odorless, and tasteless gas; some people mistakenly believe it has an odor. So, what are the actual characteristics of CO gas, is it toxic, and how to use CO gas safely and handle CO poisoning?

What is CO Gas?

What is CO Gas?

CO gas is a chemical gas called Carbon monoxide, which is colorless, odorless, and tasteless. CO is slightly soluble in water and very stable at high temperatures. Its molecule has a strong triple bond, making it very inert at room temperature (this gas mainly reacts at high temperatures).
CO gas is a very strong reducing agent and a neutral oxide that cannot form salts.

Natural Sources of CO Gas

  • From industrial emissions.
  • Volcanic activity areas.
  • Present in sedimentary mine boreholes.
  • Or during the human production of artificial ethylene oxide.

What are the Properties and Characteristics of CO Gas?

Carbon monoxide gas or CO gas, with the chemical formula CO, has the following characteristics:

  • Molecular weight of CO: 28.010 g/mol
  • Its density: 789 kg/m3
  • Liquid state: 1.250 kg/m3 at 0°C, 1 atm; 1.145 kg/m3 at 25°C, 1 atm
  • Melting point of CO: -205.02 °C (-337.04 °F, 68.13 K)
  • Boiling point: -191.5 °C (-312.7 °F; 81.6 K)
  • Carbon Monoxide gas is a colorless, odorless, and neutral oxide, slightly soluble in water but easily soluble in ethanol and benzene.
  • CO gas is very toxic; inhaling CO can be fatal to humans.

Properties of CO Gas – Carbon Monoxide Gas

Carbon monoxide is a very important industrial substance. In both gaseous and liquid forms, CO is widely used as a fuel in industrial activities.

Carbon Monoxide – CO Gas is also an effective reducing agent.

Carbon monoxide gas also reacts with some metals such as iron, nickel, and cobalt to form compounds called carbonyls.
Some generated carbonyls have unusual physical and chemical properties, which humans find useful for industry. For example, highly toxic nickel tetracarbonyl is used to produce nickel and nickel.
At high temperatures, carbon monoxide readily reacts with steam to form carbon dioxide and hydrogen gas. This process has been used by humans as a source of hydrogen to combine with nitrogen gas in the synthesis of ammonia.
With caustic alkalis, carbon monoxide appears and forms alkali forms. It can be easily converted into formic acid or alkali oxalates for the production of oxalic acid.
With some metals, CO gas forms carbonyl compounds, and many of these compounds are volatile. This chemical reaction has been widely used in the refining of nickel.
Carbon monoxide and hydrogen are also important starting materials in the production of methanol, the preparation of aldehydes and alcohols for use as fuels.

Is CO Gas Toxic? How to Handle CO Poisoning

Is CO Gas Toxic? – What are the Harmful Effects of CO Gas?

As mentioned above, CO gas is very toxic and can be harmful to humans and the surrounding environment.

  • When the CO gas concentration in the air reaches 0.04% to 0.06%, it can cause poisoning and adverse effects on humans.
  • When the concentration of coal gas or carbon monoxide reaches 12.5%, it can also cause explosions.

It can be seen that carbon monoxide is an extremely dangerous gas. Therefore, we cannot be subjective but must always be vigilant and take careful precautions.
Symptoms of CO poisoning are easily recognizable but occur very quickly, usually starting with a headache, discomfort, followed by nausea, dizziness, shortness of breath, and more dangerously, gradually leading to a coma.
At a more severe level of gas poisoning, the victim will feel chest pain, blurred vision, suffocation, shortness of breath, and a faster pulse. The lungs seem to be congested and stiff, no longer functioning. At this point, the victim may experience convulsions, unconsciousness, permanent brain damage, cardiac arrest, and death.

What to do if a Victim is Suspected of CO Poisoning?

  • If you suspect someone has CO poisoning, immediately move the victim out of that area. Or open all doors, windows, and escape routes so that air can easily enter the house. By all means, give the patient O2 to breathe and stop exposure to CO gas.
  • If the patient has only mild symptoms, they will quickly recover and regain consciousness after being moved out of the area. However, in more severe cases, you need to perform artificial respiration and then quickly take the patient to the hospital for emergency treatment.
  • The person providing first aid to the victim should also call for more support to prevent rescuers from also being affected by this toxic gas.

Measures to Help Prevent CO Poisoning at Home?

  • You can consider installing a CO detector in your home. Place the detector in locations where it can easily wake you up if there is a problem and it alarms. This gas detector can inform users of the CO concentration level in your home in addition to alarming if it exceeds the threshold. Replace your home’s CO detector every five years.
  • If you accidentally smell gas from your refrigerator, it may be leaking CO – carbon monoxide.
  • Make sure your gas appliances are properly and technically ventilated. This prevents CO gas from leaking if joints or pipes are not tightly fitted.
  • Never make temporary repairs to ventilation pipes with tape, chewing gum, or other things. These patches are only temporary and can cause CO to accumulate more in the house.
  • Never burn charcoal indoors with closed doors; burning charcoal, whether red, gray, black, or white, produces CO gas.
  • Never use generators indoors, in your basement, or garage. Use them outdoors, more than 20 feet away from windows, doors, or vents.
  • Every time you use a generator, use a backup CO detector.
