EO gas sterilization services are currently quite common, used for products sensitive to high temperatures that cannot be processed by heat sterilization.
Most ethylene oxide sterilization is for medical facilities to disinfect and sterilize personal items such as masks, gloves, bandages, surgical instruments, and laboratory equipment.
In addition, the EO gas disinfection method is also used in the fields of science, research, and fungal or cell tissue culture,…

EO Gas Instrument Processing Procedure
The medical instrument sterilization procedure using the EO sterilizer follows a traditional disinfection and sterilization cycle or a fast processing cycle.
Both types consist of three processing stages as follows.
Pre-conditioning stage:
- Goods remain in their original packaging
- Indicator tape is applied to the outside of the box, and a BI (biological indicator) tube is placed inside the box
- Conditions such as temperature, humidity, and pressure are fully prepared, and all air in the disinfection chamber is removed to allow ETO gas to enter.
- ETO gas is pumped into the medical sterilizer along with a small amount of water vapor to humidify and heat the instrument products beforehand.
Disinfection stage:
- Humidity is increased to allow ETO gas to penetrate most effectively into all surfaces of the items to be sterilized.
- EO gas is added or pumped in as needed during a certain working period.
After the sterilization process is completed (minimum 8 hours), the indicator tape changes color from blue to orange, and the BI tube changes color from white to red, indicating successful sterilization. If the BI tube remains white, it means the sterilization result is unsuccessful.
Aeration or ventilation stage:
- This is the longest and most important step in the EO gas instrument processing procedure.
- The ventilation process involves pumping HEPA-filtered gas at a temperature of 30 to 50 degrees Celsius for 2 days (48 hours).
Note: EO gas (C2H4O) has high penetrating properties. Combined with the temperature and pressure in the sterilizer, it will penetrate almost all surfaces/materials of the product packaging.

Importance of Medical Instrument Sterilization
Proper cleaning and sterilization of medical instruments, disinfection, and sterilization of surgical instruments is very important in limiting the transmission of microorganisms from reusable instruments.
The level of medical instrument disinfection and sterilization depends on the risk of infection when those instruments are reused.
Currently, there are many different ways to clean and disinfect, including:
- Decontamination, scrubbing
- Antiseptic
- Aseptic
- Disinfection by boiling or using chemicals
- Sterilization by dry or moist heat or chemical sterilization.
Depending on whether the instrument is critical, semi-critical, or non-critical according to the level of contact, we need to choose the appropriate level of processing.
Difference between Medical Instrument Sterilization and Disinfection
Sterilization and disinfection are both processes of removing foreign objects such as dirt, organic matter, and microorganisms from objects and the body to make them cleaner and safer.
- Disinfection: is a method to kill microorganisms on objects or on the body to a level that is not dangerous to health. The disinfection process does not completely kill microbial spores.
- Sterilization: is a method that uses a physical or chemical process to completely kill microorganisms and highly resistant microbial spores.
All critical instruments that come into direct contact with blood vessels, non-intact mucous membranes, or sterile areas of the body must be sterilized.
Medical instrument sterilization is a process and must follow appropriate principles to achieve and maintain sterility. In addition, there are many different types of chemical disinfectants used to reprocess reusable, non-heat-resistant instruments.
Instrument sterilization methods using machines commonly used in hospitals:
- Moist heat by autoclave;
- Gas sterilization (ethylene oxide sterilization or formaldehyde gas);
- Plasma sterilization
- Dry heat
