Faraday cage is a metal enclosure that covers the protected area, designed as a system including symmetrical conductors. According to electromagnetic wave theory, this is an ideal method for lightning protection or shielding against RF interference from MRI PPCS scanners.
This Faraday cage is used to protect certain special areas such as hospitals protecting MRI machines, explosive or nuclear storage facilities…
So, what exactly is a Faraday cage, what is the Faraday cage effect, what is the operating principle of a Faraday cage, and what are the current applications of Faraday cages?
All questions about RF cages or Faraday cages will be answered specifically below.
What is a Faraday cage?
A Faraday cage, or RF cage, is a conductive enclosure where the electric field inside it is zero at every point. A Faraday cage acts as an “electrical shield” or enclosure for people and equipment inside, protecting them from any electrical forces or electromagnetic fields from the outside.
Operating principle of a Faraday cage
The operating principle of a Faraday cage: the total electromagnetic field inside the RF cage is zero. If there is an electric current, it will conduct around the cage because the resistance of the cage is low, so the object inside the cage is not electrically charged.
To resist external electric fields, the cage must be thick enough and any holes in the Faraday cage must be smaller than the wavelength.

What components make up a Faraday cage?
![]()
The structure of a Faraday cage includes floor, wall, and ceiling modules (aluminum/galvanized steel), including conductive materials. The materials used are steel or copper and brass, or a combination of both steel and copper, such as steel walls and a copper ceiling and floor.
- The floor module of the Faraday cage is made of 19mm thick anti-static material.
- Main door: 1 protective door with latches and a latch lock. The lock has a special function that allows the door to be opened from the outside even when the lock is latched from the inside.
- Window: 1 window for observation and protection.
- RF cage frame system: includes 4 frame parts; M, U, caps, and flat M and U parts joined together to form 90-degree corner joints. The caps and flat parts are joined together to form panel joints.
- 6mm bolts and nuts used to connect straps, corners, caps, and flat parts
- Insulated modular suspended ceiling, aluminum ceiling.
- Lighting: LED or halogen lamps
- Ventilation: RF cage vents allow airflow for cooling or heating.
- Walls: with sound-absorbing material inside and MDF wood outside for decoration (termite-treated)….
What are the applications of Faraday cages?
Currently in Vietnam, Faraday cages are mainly used for medical purposes. They are used to create shielded rooms where magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) machines are placed, with the purpose of preventing external RF (radio frequency) signals.

This limits the interference with the patient’s scan results. From there, it helps doctors diagnose patients most accurately.
