HELPFUL INFORMATION ABOUT LPG TANKS

LPG is the name of a mixture of hydrocarbon gas with the main composition of Propane gas (C3H8) and Butane gas (C4H10). This mixture is called liquefied petroleum gas or LPG.Under normal temperature and pressure, LPG exists as a gas. But, to ensure convenience and safety during transportation, LPG will be compressed at high pressure in LPG tanks or liquefied gas tanks.LPG gas is widely used in industrial, civil or commercial activities.

How are industrial gas tanks used? What are the characteristics of LPG tanks and how many types are there? Let’s find out detailed information about this liquid compressed air tank with MIGCO.

What is an LPG tank?

LPG tanks, are also known as industrial gas tanks, liquefied gas tanks or compressed air tanks. It is an equipment used to store liquefied petroleum gas (LPG – Liquefied petroleum gas) for production and trading purposes.LPG is a substance with high flammability and danger characteristics, so during the operation of LPG-related equipment, it is necessary to strictly carry out safety inspection to eliminate potential risks and dangers.Liquefied gas tanks (LPG, CNG, LNG) are compulsory equipment to meet strict labor safety requirements under the management authority of the Ministry of Industry and Trade.

How many types of LPG tanks are there?

Compressed air tanks help you store a large amount of liquefied gas, … in order to serve the production business more smoothly.Currently, liquefied gas tanks are designed mainly with 2 main types:

  • Industrial gas tank vertical type
  • Industrial gas storage tank type lying

LPG tank application:

Industrial gas tanks are used for industries such as metallurgy, zinc coating or in the production of handicrafts, produce and process food. And the LPG tank is also used in agriculture to provide heat for livestock

Material of LPG tanks:

Materials for manufacturing industrial gas tanks: Stainless steel SUS304, SUS316, SUS201, CT3, SS400, white steel, black steel, …

Structure of LPG liquid gas tank:

The structure of a liquid gas tank or liquefied gas tank includes: The tank body, the tank door, the vent unit and the base of the tank.

  • Tank body: usually designed with a circular cylinder, square or rectangular shape. The tank body consists of 2 layers, the outside is the tank cover, there is a vacuum layer in the middle and finally the inner gas tank. The vacuum in the middle of the two shells functions as an insulation to limit the increase in the pressure of the liquefied gas inside when the temperature increases causing the liquid gas to expand.
  • Tank caps: There are many types of liquefied gas tank caps, such as flat sieve caps, toilet caps or cones.
  • The bottom of the basin is similar to the tank cap, there are also 3 types of flat: flat, the spherical or the cone shape.
  • Tub base: Anti-spin switch, round legs or L-shaped legs
  • Staircase (if present in large volume): Staircase in vertical shape or around the sink
  • There is a system of pipes to help in filling out the tank with liquefied gas, when liquid or gas is out in the way of use.

Industrial gas tanks are often equipped with safety valves and valves. In case the pressure level inside the tank is increased due to little use or temperature increasing, these valves will work to reduce internal pressure to ensure the safety of the gas tank. The equipment comes with a compressed air tank:

  • Safety valve
  • Thermal sensor
  • Thermometer
  • Weight sensor
  • Flanges
  • Observation glasses
  • Pressure sensors
  • Thermal meter sensor
  • Heating system
  • Stirring motor controlled via inverter

Regulations on tank LPG standards:

You can find out the concept of LPG tanks and issues related to LPG tanks as specified in Clause 3, Article 3 of the National Technical Regulation QCVN 10: 2012 / BCT on the safety of petroleum gas supply stations issued by the Ministry of Industry and Trade. Whereby:LPG tank is a compressed air tank used to store LPG with a storage capacity equal to or greater than 0.15m3.

  1. a) Floating tank means a tank that is placed above the ground and is not covered with sand or soil;
  2. b) A submersible tank is a type of LPG tank that is buried underground and covered with sand or soil;
  3. c) An earth-filled tank is a type of tank that is placed above the ground and covered with sand or soil.

Since it is a type of tank that needs a high level of safety, it should be regularly inspected and verified before and during use. Let’s join MIGCO to learn some LPG tank testing standards.

LPG tank testing standards

Standards and regulations applied during the inspection of LPG tanks need to be approved by the local authorities.

  • QCVN 01: 2008 / BLĐTBXH, National technical regulation on safety of boilers and pressure vessels
  • QCVN: 10-2012 / BCT, National technical regulation on safety for liquefied petroleum gas supply station.
  • QTKĐ 03: 2017 / BCT, Technical safety inspection process for liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) tanks
  • TCVN 8366: 2010 on pressure vessels. Safety technical requirements for design, fabrication and structure.
  • TCVN6155: 1996 regulations on pressure vessels. Safety technical requirements for installation, use or repair
  • TCVN6156: 1996 regulations on pressure vessels. Safety specifications regarding installation, use or repair, test methods
  • TCVN 6008: 2010, Standard on pressure equipment – Welds. Technical requirements and testing methods
  • TCVN 7441: 2004, Liquefied petroleum gas supply system – LPG at point of consumption – Requirements for design, installation and operation
  • TCVN 6486: 2008, Standard on liquefied gas -LPG. Existing under pressure – Requirements on design and installation location

In addition, depending on each individual case, it is necessary to assess the quality of the LPG tank according to foreign standards but absolutely not lower than the levels prescribed in our own country.

Inspection period for liquefied gas tank or LPG tank:

The inspection of LPG tank or liquefied gas tank is done at the following times:

  • // Check for the first time after installing the tank system and before your business is put into use
  • Periodic quality inspection during use for every 3 years and every 2 years when reaching a shelf life of more than 12 years.

Abnormal inspection will be conducted upon request from the authorities or user units. An abnormal inspection has to be conducted when there is any change in the installation, replacement or repair location. This inspection also applies to pressure cylinders and tanks with a downtime of more than 12 months. The information above is about LPG storage tanks. If you are in need of designing and installing an LPG tank, please contact Migco immediately.
