What are the applications of Helium?

Helium has many unique properties such as low boiling, low density, low solubility, high thermal conductivity, and inertness. Hence it is widely used based on these characteristics

  • Pumping into hot air balloons or balloons for children
  • It is used in refrigeration electronics to detect leaks in structural systems such as air conditioners or cars … that can help manufacturers have timely solutions.
  • It is also used for the protection of optical fibers, production of semiconductors, manufacturing lamps, diffusing and dissipating heat quickly.
  • In Astronomy field: It is used to measure and determine the age of rocks and as well asin supersonic wind basements or for laboratories and altitude studies ….Read MORE
  • Helium gas is also pumped into divers’ gas tanks.
  • Helium is used for manufacturing computer hard drives
  • Being compressed gas in liquid fuel for rockets
  • In Medicine field: Helium plays an important role in helping doctors observe the patient’s exact breathing rhythm or in asthma treatment when combined with oxygen.
  • In scientific research: helium is used as a gas conductor in chemical analyzes by gas chromatography.

SOME INFORMATION ABOUT HELIUM MAYBE YOU DON’T KNOW?

khí heli là gì

WHAT IS HELIUM GAS?

Helium gas is present in most natural gases, making up 24% of the measured mass of the universe. Helium is an inert gas and does not react with any elements.

Helium is found in natural gas and mines. However, helium is a non-renewable gas, that means Helium is a finite resource.

Helium is the second element in the universe following hydrogen. Helium is naturally formed from the natural radioactive decay of heavy element in the Earth

Where was Helium discovered and by whom?

Helium is one of the most important elements in the universe but it makes up most of the outside of the earth’s atmosphere.

Helium was first known in 1868 thanks to Pierre Janssen and Joseph Lockyer – 2 astronomers alternately from France and England. They discovered Helium while they were studying about the solar eclipse. Helium (He) is named after the word “Helios”, the name of Sun God in Greek mythology.

Helium was isolated on Earth for the first time in 1895 when William Ramsay – a Scottish chemist –  extracted it from the radioactive mineral Cleveite.

In 1905, natural gas from a well near Dexter area – Kansas was determined to contain about 2% helium.

Helium from different natural sources all over the World is found in different concentrations. The highest helium concentrations are found mainly in the United States and several other countries such as Qatar, Algeria, and Russia.

Raw helium sources on Earth:

Helium is created by the radioactive decay of heavy elements such as uranium and thorium in the ground. Part of the radiation that consists of alpha particles will form the nucleus of the helium atoms. Some of these helium molecules move up to the earth’s surface than into the atmosphere and space. The rest will be trapped confusingly with other natural gases under the air permeates the rock.

The amount of helium found in different natural gas fields is various. Helium gas is mainly exploited from these natural gas fields to serve the needs of daily life, production and research.

Helium can also be extracted from natural gases by liquefying and separating the gaseous components. This method works on the principle that each gas liquefies at different temperatures. However, the cost of producing helium gas by this method is quite high and the amount of helium in the air is very low. Therefore, it is often used to produce gases such as nitrogen and oxygen instead of helium

WHAT IS THE COMPOSITION (PROPERTIES) OF HELI GAS?

Helium is a chemical element existing in a gaseous form and it does not react chemically with other elements because of its inertness.

The helium gas is nontoxic, has no taste, diffuses easily through solids, and has the lowest boiling point of any existing elements. Helium gas is less soluble in water but more soluble in benzene, ethyl alcohol, or toluene.

Helium is used in different industries in life such as medicine, industry …

Is helium toxic? Does it cause any health effects?

Helium is an inert gas and non-toxic, does not cause an explosion, especially does not react chemically with other substances. Helium is neutral at standard conditions.

However, when using Helium gas for different purposes, users should note that if you inhale a large amount of it directly, your body will be susceptible to severe hypoxia and choking, dizziness, headache. Skin or eyes can be frostbite when exposing to liquid helium.

In particular, people often directly breathe helium gas compressed in high-pressure cylinders in case they want to temporarily change the voice to a higher tone.

This way is very harmful because the fast and strong outflow of air can rupture lung tissue. In the worst case, it can lead to a stroke and death if it goes into the bloodstream.

TRANSPORT AND DELIVERY PROCESS

A REPUTABLE HELIUM GAS SUPPLIER?

Helium can be safely transported by road, but not by plane.

Although the helium cylinders of MIGCO have been tested for safety according to both Vietnamese and international regulations. But many components of the cylinders such as valves, steering wheel or taps are very easy to get damaged if you are not careful or transport them incorrectly.

MIGCO always ensures safety in the preservation and transportation of industrial gases and pure gases cylinders.

Moreover, Helium can cause asphyxiation, so when released in confined spaces such as in a car, it may cause unconsciousness or death from suffocation for the driver and the occupant of the vehicle.
